COMMUNITY KILLA - GORDON SINN

the first thing you’ll notice about our new pal Gordo is that he’s got a 1000 watt smile that could light up any room. a burst of energy + JOY, bringing attention + INTENTION to all things he does. his nominator described him as “energetic, driven, + passionate” + we seriously couldn’t agree more.
after moving to Calgary 6 years ago, Gordon now spends his days as a member of the Kit + Ace dream-team at their Calgary 17th avenue location, as well as co-founder of the Living Room Series [ a modern take on French-salon-style gatherings] where he + his co-founder aim to gather people from all walks of life + connect through discussion + storytelling.
we caught up with Gordo to ask him a few q's on what building community in our city means to him!

HOW CAN PEOPLE BEST SUPPORT + ENGAGE WITH YOU/ THE WORK YOU DO?

G: people can best support me by checking out Living Room Series. Steven + I started this initiative 3 years ago. The Living Room Series is inspired by 18th century French salons where a cross-section of society would gather to discuss ideas and share their passion for the arts. through our events, we aim to gather people with different backgrounds to expand everyone's perspective through words and stories.

WHAT ARE THREE WORDS DESCRIBE OUR CITY?

G: optimistic. purpose-driven. HEART.

WHAT DOES "ELEVATING COMMUNITY" MEAN TO YOU?

G: when I think about elevating community, I think of myself, aspire individuals + supporting local economies.

since Living Room Series, I have developed this thought that in order to do anything, it stems from ourselves first. what drives us + what message do we want the world to know before we share that. this develops the why it is important in order to spread that message. without the why, it is difficult to gain buy-in from others + also ourselves. what is going to push us to continue to elevate?

aspire individuals are the ones that look up to your message + find new meaning in their life. during their beginning journey of discovering their own message + story, they are seeking for inspiration + mentoring of developing their own. elevating community is the act of spending time with these people. listen out for what they are looking to do + help them in finding what it is they want the world to know. the aspire individuals will remember your coaching + help + will continue an effect to help others that look up to them in the future.

finally - supporting our local economies. when preparing a campaign + new ideas. take the moment to search our in our local community for support. from my experience, it may be supporting by purchasing goodies from these companies... there are times that it becomes a collaboration between brands. help each other out - coopetition!

IF YOU WERE ASKED BY SOMEONE SEEKING COMMUNITY OR LOOKING TO BROADEN THEIR COMMUNITY. WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE TO THEM BE?

G: my advice to those that are seeking or looking to broaden your community is to be brave to ask. I remember how scared I was to ask my instructor, partner at the tax consulting firm out for coffee. I had the negative self-talk of I'm wasting their time + I am not sure that they would like to chat. I remember how delighted individuals were to coffee. sometimes it may result in scheduling conflicts + it doesn't happen but I remember thinking that they are not rejecting me, they have other priorities that they had to attend to. If it is meant to happen, it will! I am in control.

PUT YOURSELF BACK IN THE SHOES OF YOUR 15-YEAR-OLD SELF, WHAT WOULD YOU SHARE WITH THE 15-YEAR-OLDS OF 2020?

G: 1. you don't have to walk the same path as everyone else around us. it is okay to be different + have different passions.

2. it is okay to give up but remember to always channel the same energy + dedication to something new. don't let that flame fade.

my playlist includes some controversial music of that time. these songs remind me that being different allowed them to fully express themselves + break the norm to create our future tomorrow.

A CURATED PLAYLIST BY GORDON SINN

HIS FAVE TRACK?!

Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliot

It always takes me back to Grade 4 watching the music video on Much Music. It was so different and weird but I loved it. The beat and the vibe gave me an invincible feeling.
