COMMUNITY KILLAS - ALEX HICKS

the first thing you'll notice about Alex... her WARMTH; this one's HEART shines mega bright from the moment you meet her. she has a quiet, intentional, calm presence that grounds those around her. we've caught this gal in VARIOUS neighbourhoods in the city over the last few months, strolling with a book in hand, a coffee + ALWAYS rocking a radiant smile. [it's likely she's been on her way to, or from, the mountains... soaking up time in nature fishing or climbing!]
her nominator described her as ANGELIC, KIND + CREATIVE. characteristics that are MEGA present + felt in the work she does + the connections she makes in her community.
co-founder of Jungle Plant Project - the amazing plant-design company who bring innovative + beautiful designs to spaces all over YYC. when Al isn't imagining her gorgeous creations, she spends her days as a student in MRU's interior design program, honing + growing her design capabilities. without question, this multi-hyphenate magic maker is one-to-watch in the design + creative industry.

HOW CAN BE PEOPLE BEST SUPPORT YOU + THE WORK THAT YOU DO?

if we are talking straight to the source, it's Jungle's instagram. recently I have been playing around with it in hopes that people will get to see how I see the world + what in it inspires me. I am so grateful to have a company that works in ways which parallel what I am in school to do. so, whether you want to talk plants, design, plant-design (ha), or you just want to chat about something that peaked your intrigue, reach out to me. I am always down for a chat.

IF YOU COULD PAINT A VISION FOR CALGARY'S FUTURE, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

without getting too political, I just want to say that change is both good + healthy. do not be afraid of what we don't know or haven't seen yet. jump in + try something new. from architecture to political climates, Calgary has a long history of repeating itself. can we challenge the status quo + build a place that pulses with the arts, education + a vibrancy kin to our larger neighbouring cities? Calgary is a dynamic city bursting with unique + talented individuals. how can we tap into that? how can we take advantage of this potential?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CALGARY RESOURCE + WHY?

the people. this small town, big city is bustling with explorers, thinkers, creators + doers. since moving back here I have + continue to meet some of the most incredible people. they have encouraged me to [literally + figuratively] climb, run, bike, canoe, hike, fish, learn, jump, shake, groove, laugh, get lost, fail + move through this life. one of those special someones happens to be the reason I am here talking to you. the more we connect + realize peoples' potential, the more power we have to do.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL BUSINESS + WHY?

run by an extremely small ship [more like an canoe] of people who work their tushes off to create a dynamic experience for all types of people in the city. for the entire five days, when all their hard work comes to light, they provide is with an unforgettable + enriching cultural experience that makes us come alive. this one-of-a-kind business sees to it that dreams come true + memorable experiences are had. + as they do, watch as the people bike, dance, laugh + connect. I could go on + on.

my favourite business in Calgary? Sled Island
